Joy-Lance Mickels heartbroken after injury rules him out of Amavubi debut

The Sabah FK winger, who received his first-ever call-up to the Rwandan national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and South Africa, sustained the injury in the 92nd minute of his club match just a day before he was scheduled to travel and join the national team camp.

In an emotional statement shared on his social media, Mickels said he was devastated by the timing of the setback:

“It deeply saddens me to share that, after being called up to the national team for the very first time, I suffered a serious rib injury in the 92nd minute just one day before our planned departure.

I was as excited as a child to finally experience this moment especially to be part of such important World Cup qualification matches against Benin and South Africa.

Nevertheless, I am truly grateful for the call-up and for the trust placed in me. I firmly believe that God has a different plan for me, and I accept it with faith and humility.

I will now be the team’s number one fan cheering, celebrating, and supporting you all from afar. Thank you."

The 31-year-old forward, born in Germany to Rwandan parent, has been in impressive form for Sabah FK in the Azerbaijan Premier League, earning him a maiden invitation from national team head coach Adel Amrouche.

Mickels absence will be a big blow for Rwanda as they prepare for crucial fixtures that could define their path to the 2026 World Cup. Still, fans have flooded his post with messages of support, praising his humility and positive attitude.

The Amavubi faithful will now have to wait a little longer to see Mickels don the national colours but his spirit, commitment, and optimism have already won hearts across Rwanda.
